Are you or is anyone you know newly arrived in Canada, under 30 years old and interested in organic farming? With generous funding provided by the Project Learning Tree Canada, through their Newcomers Youth Program, we are hiring two Farm Assistants to join our Production Team this Spring (May-June) (possibility of an extension).
Responsibilities:
The Organic Farming Assistant will help with all aspects of field work on the farm this Spring. Working with the Farm Manager and Director of Programs and Development, you will be an integral member of our Spring start-up team and help prepare our farm for the season to come. Tasks will include:
- all aspects of bed preparation, direct seeding, transplanting seedlings, weeding, thinning and harvesting.
- help set up and maintain our greenhouses, install row covers and irrigation and do maintenance and repairs.
- assist with soil management techniques including mulch and compost application and managing cover crops.
- assist in record keeping for organic certification, and operation of our CSA and volunteer programs.

Requirements:
As this funding is provided through Project Learning Tree’s Newcomer Youth Program, we can only accept applications from people who meet the following requirements:
- Be between the ages of fifteen (15) and thirty (30)
- Be a new immigrant to Canada in the last five (5) years
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Be able to work between 4-8 weeks full time between May 3rd - June 25th.
Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm, reliability and motivated to learn about small scale organic farming
- The physical ability to work in all weather conditions (including mosquitoes). You will be required to use hands, wrists, knees and back, to be able to walk much of the day, to stoop, kneel, lift and twist and lift 30 pounds regularly.
- Excellent people skills, creative problem solver with a strong work ethic
- Team player with the ability to work independently, take direction and finish jobs
- Attention to detail , plus be willing to take the initiative when required
- While previous farming experience is preferred, it is not required. However, it is essential that candidates are committed to the farming lifestyle and all that it demands throughout the duration of the term.
